Those that are familiar with me know about my deep connection to The National. Still one of the better bands I’ve seen live (I’m biased), but I find their earlier live sets are rawer and exude more impact on screen.
This performance was uploaded fairly recently given its circa date. This is during the era where the band was touring behind Alligator and getting ready to record their eventual opus, Boxer. Its also worth noting the band was feeling some strain and perceived as somewhat of a disappointing tour - where infamously they had Clap Your Hands Say Yeah as openers and people had left before The National got on stage - and felt they weren’t breaking through.
In this set, the band is percise and energetic and Matt going berserk for most of the set, key elements of their live sets today - that still make them one of the better live bands to see.
